Mia Bockenhoff and I are part of a LinkedIn group called “Artificial Intelligence AI Digital Transformation Data Science Automation Machine Learning Analytics” ( https://www.linkedin.com/groups/4376214/)She recently recently wrote an interesting post regarding AI and Journalism. I have summarised her story below:
When considering AI and journalism, the common concern is often job displacement. However, it’s important to consider how this new era of cognitive technology impacts freedom of opinion and the formation of will. AI is already helping journalists by taking on certain tasks, improving efficiency, opportunities, and speed. There are many examples of seamless collaboration between human and automated work.
However, in cases where ethical decisions or profound difficulties arise, the ability to obtain information from all around the world on all conceivable topics is a gift from humans. It is a gift that strives to prevent the suppression of opinions, expose falsehoods, alter perspectives, and, most importantly, empower individuals to choose, think, and act. Moral values cannot be programmed.
Thus, the most effective approach to ensuring the credibility, dependability, and transparency of journalistic work is to combine the rationality and efficiency of AI with the empathy and diversity of humans. Without progress, there is no future. Link to actual story here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7054402582307291136?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop
My response to her story below:
“Well said Mia!
In an age where journalism has become politically polarised, it will be essential for the next generation of journalists to harness AI in positive and transparent ways for the people and news they deliver.
The main stream media has largely lost credibility in recent years,.. and probably long overdue.
AI output is only as good as the data it is given, hopefully a new age of trustworthy, unbiased journalism will emerge.
A truely great opportunity for journalists to reinvent themselves and guide(work with) AI to deliver more facts and less opinion based news”.
